The Ask
Our friends at CBS All Access wanted to promote their latest feature documentary, Console Wars, which details the decade-long battle that defined generations: Nintendo vs. Sega. In order to hype up a doc of such epic proportions, we would need to create an array of broadcast elements that were oozing with 90’s nostalgia. Game on!
The Challenge
With big name brands like Nintendo and Sega, we wanted to make sure that our designs felt recognizable and consistent to their overall image. This would require us to go back in time, whilst simultaneously advancing forward with the animation style. Even though we were working with pixilation in the design, we wanted the motion to feel crisp and clean, with a modern edge. Plus, no cheat codes were used in the production of this promo.
The Result
Our team took a stroll down memory lane and pulled design inspiration from our favorite classic Mario and Sonic games to perfectly balance sharp style with pixelated nostalgia. We ended up with 18-bit excellence crafted in Adobe Photoshop in the form of an animated toolkit which perfectly fit the retro stylings of two iconic entertainment giants. We pulled out all the stops to ensure this CBS All Access promotion got a heavy sprinkle of our in-house magic pixel dust, via our After Effects magic joystick-wand, for what was a game-changing premiere.
