The Ask
If a student is behaving poorly in the classroom, it may actually be due to an undiagnosed health issue. Our friends at ASO Advertising called on our design studio to create a long-form explainer animation on behalf of the Georgia Department of Education which would bring these various issues to light. Aside from raising general awareness, the video would also assure school administrators that help from community professionals is available to them in these scenarios.
The Challenge
Although this animation was meant for an adult audience, we still wanted the issues to be expressed from a student’s perspective. Because of that, we were challenged to portray these very serious and concrete issues in a more imaginative and symbolic way. This sentiment also needed to be reflected in the character designs and animations throughout. Without a linear storyline, we needed to find a solution for the transitions and how to move between each scenario without breaking up the overall flow of the piece.
The Result
Guiding viewers through five different health barriers facing students in Georgia, the animation serves to inform and empower school communities. Using a neutral color for the background throughout, we assigned each health issue a predominant color from the DOE brand palette so each section would feel both distinct and cohesive. Along with these pops of color, abstracting the characters to their simplest shapes helped us to convey each issue from a more youthful perspective. We used Adobe Illustrator for the character designs and illustration, while the animations and rigging were handled in After Effects.
